Mrs. Pond was delighted to greet Markham after the lecture. She wanted to tell him that her Study Club meet on his birthday in this honor. She has been reading his work for years. She discusses some of his ideas and refers to Charles Fillmore. She has made speeches on his work to various clubs and groups. She explains she is the wife of his rival. Refers to Longfellow.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
